The maximum cable length for GPS antennas used in GPS NTP Server systems is limited by the signal losses of the coax cable used to connect the antenna to the GPS receiver. A low quality coax can be used for cable runs of 20 to 50m. Higher quality coax can be used for cable runs of 50-80m. However, for cable runs beyond 80m, a GPS amplifier may be required. Using a single GPS amplifier, cable runs of up to 200m cab be achieved. Distances far greater than 200m can be achieved by utilising multiple GPS amplifiers.
Although the ideal location for a GPS timing antenna is on a roof-top with a good view of the sky, very often a window located antenna will work almost as well.
