The big advantage of GPS NTP Server systems over radio based timing installations, is that they can operate world-wide. Radio based NTP servers systems are restricted by the transmission range of the radio time signal, which is typically 1500 km. This means that the signal can only be received by the country where the radio transmitter is located and maybe surrounding counties. The DCF-77 signal transmitted from Germany can only be obtain in Central and Western Europe. The UK's MSF radio time signal can be obtained in the British Isles and North-Western Europe.
Provided a GPS antenna is installed with a good view of the sky, a GPS NTP server can be utilised anywhere in the world.
The ideal location for a GPS antenna in a GPS NTP server installation is on a roof-top with a good view of the sky. This means that the antenna can be prone to lightning strikes. A lightning strike up to a quarter of a mile away can cause damage to a GPS system.
