GMT Time Server

A GMT Time Server maintains a precise internal clock locked to GMT time and provides a network with an accurate time reference. Indeed most network time servers are synchronised to GMT and know nothing of time zones and daylight saving offsets.

It is a function of client computers to add an offset to the GMT time supplied by a time server to accommodate local time zone and daylight saving. In this manner, a client machine anywhere in the world can synchronise to a server located in a completely different time zone and still maintain accurate local time.

Network time servers do not adjust for daylight saving or local time zones. Any offset is applied by the network time client. This allows much more flexibility to select time zone and daylight saving locally. Different machines on the same network can operate on different time zones, if required, rather than being locked to a specific time zone determined by a server.

For instance a Windows PC can synchronise to a GMT based time reference, but through it's time and date properties and time zone selection, it can operate on any selected time zone and daylight saving time setting.
