TimeTools SR series GPS Time Server utilises the Global Positioning System to provide networks with a high precision source of time for computer time synchronisation purposes. The GPS system is a constellation of orbiting satellites, primarily used for navigation purposes. However, each satellite has a highly accurate atomic clock on-board, which can be used to obtain very precise timing information.
The GPS signal can be received anywhere on the face of the Earth, provided that an antenna can be located with a good view of the sky. Ideally, a roof-top located antenna is best, however, often a good signal lock can be obtained on the side of a building or in a Window. Indeed, with the SR series high-sensativity receiver, often a GPS lock can be achieved with the antenna mounted indoors with no direct view of the sky.
GPS tends to be a much more reliable source of accurate time than broadcast radio time and frequency references. Radio broadcasts have a finite range and can often be blocked by the topography of the land, such as nearby hills or mountains. A rooftop mounted GPS antenna can be more time consuming to install but it does provide a good consistent and highly accurate source of time.
TimeTools SR series NTP servers can accept either a GPS antenna or a radio antenna or indeed both to provide dual reference. If both GPS and radio antennas are connected, then GPS will be used as a primary source, because it is more accurate, the radio source will be used as backup in the event of GPS signal lock failure.
TimeTools has a range of accessories that be supplied with the SR series. Splitters allow a single antenna to be shared by up to 32 receivers. Multi-strike surge suppressors protect expensive network equipment against possible lightning strikes on an external antenna. Amplifiers can be used to boost signals for extended antenna cable runs. We can also provide GPS over fibre optic cable converters for antenna cable runs of more than 1km.
