UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) time is very similar to GMT time. It is the same all around the world, it does not vary with time zone or with daylight saving changes. It is a common time world-wide. It is used by computers for time synchronisation because it provides a common base-time regardless of which time zone the computer is located. If UTC time is used as a base-time, any time zone or daylight saving offset can be applied locally. In this manner a computer anywhere in the world can sync to a computer anywhere else in the world without worrying about time zone or daylight saving offsets.

Most time servers supply UTC time to network time clients. The client then adds an offset, calculated from time zone and daylight saving time properties, to provide a local time. Most operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux and UNIX operate in this manner. Indeed the NTP (Network Time Protocol) which is the standard protocol for network time synchronisation only operates using UTC time. Time stamps generated by a NTP server for client synchronisation only use UTC time. The client then adds any offset locally to provide a local time.
